eCommerce and Product Taxonomy Services

WAND professional services can help you design an effective and intuitive taxonomy for your product data.
eCommerce product taxonomy is important to make sure that shoppers are both finding the products they wish to buy and that shoppers get the right information they need to make a buying decision.
eCommerce and Product taxonomies are comprised of a browseable category tree structure, which helps place a product in the appropriate category, and product attribute/specification templates, which defines the product level specification details that can be displayed to your customers.   Both are important elements of an ecommerce product taxonomy.
The foundation of our eCommerce taxonomy services is our leading WAND Product and Service Taxonomy which has been developed over the last 25 years and has over 45,000 categories each with a detailed attribute template.  These templates include extensive pick lists for things like brands, colors, materials, dimensions, as well as specifications specific to each product or service category.
We build all taxonomies within the WAND eCommerce Taxonomy Portal and PIM which is an extension of our metadata modeling tool and is purpose built for managing ecommerce category hierarchies and attribute specification templates.  With this extensive taxonomy and advanced tools at our disposal in the WAND eCommerce Taxonomy Portal, we can quickly identify the categories that are a match with your product mix and immediately begin to organize these categories into a hierarchy that makes the most sense for that product mix. Instead of developing attribute templates from scratch, we can quickly start polishing the attribute templates based on each clients individual needs.  This allows us to deliver a higher quality eCommerce taxonomy more quickly than starting from a blank slate.
Our tool set makes it easy to collaborate with our clients as we build out and customize their eCommerce taxonomy. This provides real time visibility into the progress of development and an environment where the eCommerce taxonomy can continue to change and grow over time.  The eCommerce taxonomy can then be exported into your chosen PIM or eCommerce software platform.

Why WAND's eCommerce Taxonomy Services?

WAND has decades of experience creating ecommerce taxonomies and we have proven processes and an experienced team. Clients can access the WAND eCommerce Taxonomy Portal and PIM during the build and see the progress as it happens. Content from the WAND Product and Service Taxonomy is available as a jump-start so we don't have to develop everything from scratch.

The WAND process is simple:

  • Pre-work and Discovery
    • Start with a catalog audit to understand the scope of the project and the high level category branches that will be needed.
    • Complete a technology review to understand where the taxonomy data will be used in your environment and make sure that any technology limitations are accounted for in the taxonomy design
    • Evaluate any additional metadata needs such as definitions, naming conventions, UNID requirements, unit of measure conversions, and more.
    • Develop a few sample categories and attribute templates so that all stakeholders are in agreement with the level of detail and specificity that will be used throughout the project.   Some ecommerce sites only want to display the most important attributes while others want to go into a great level of detail.   Neither is incorrect, but WAND can help you understand the pros and cons of each approach so that the work can kick off with a direction that everybody agrees with.
  • eCommerce Taxonomy Build
    • Define a taxonomy category structure that will provide a category for every product in your catalog.  The client team gets the opportunity to provide feedback and made revisions to the design we submit.
    • Create category names that are designed for usability and for search engine optimization
    • For each category, WAND will develop an attribute template that will define the specifications that will be gathered for each product in the category. Attributes can be single select, multi-select, or numeric. The templates will be to the same level of quality and detail that was agreed upon for the sample categories.
    • For each attribute, WAND will define the set of values that are valid choices for single select or multi-select attributes.
  • Delivery
    • The end product is a taxonomy that is ready to be imported into your own ecommerce engine or product information management tool
    • If you don't have a product information management tool, the WAND eCommerce Taxonomy Portal and PIM can be used to manage ongoing product categorization, attribution, and taxonomy governance.
    • The WAND  team can help enrich product catalog data by placing SKUs into the correct product category as well as assigning the appropriate attribute values to each SKU.
