What is the WAND Product and Service Taxonomy?
The WAND Product and Service Taxonomy is a structured vocabulary of over 82,000 product and service terms of which approximately 42,000 are preferred terms and approximately 40,000 are synonyms. Adhering to the ANSI Z39.19 standard for thesaural development, this taxonomy is the most extensive horizontal industry taxonomy in existence, with a unique combination of depth and breadth in coverage. The terminology is organized into a structure with broader terms, narrower terms, related terms, and synonymous terms to provide a simple and intuitive navigation experience. WAND has extended the precision of the vocabulary beyond its 82,000+ terms to include 1.3 million associated attributes and attribute values for classifying products and services down to the catalog level. The base terminology of the taxonomy, comprised of the 42,000+ preferred terms, is translated in to eleven languages.

How can the Product and Service Taxonomy be used?
Available in its entirety, or as vertical industry seed taxonomies, the Product and Service Taxonomy can be used in a variety of applications including knowledge management, content management, business directories, spend and sourcing management, SRM, e-catalogs, enterprise search, company data management, direct marketing, and to enhance data and applications already utilizing other industry classification standards, such as UNSPSC, SIC, NAICS, and HS.

How was the Product and Service Taxonomy developed?
The WAND Product and Service Taxonomy launched with 55,000 terms in 1996 and has grown ever since through continued updating and user feedback. The taxonomy is a controlled vocabulary developed with the guidance of library scientists, lexicographers, and industry experts. Each term and the associated set of attributes and attributes values is carefully considered and researched before its inclusion into the thesaurus.
The following industry taxonomies have been pre-packaged for delivery and custom industry segmentation is also available.
